About File Compression

Some of our downloadable files are in a “compressed” format, meaning that they have been compacted so they can travel more quickly across networks. After they arrive at your location — either your computer or on a network drive — they must be decompressed before you can view or install their contents.

The decompression procedure varies depending on your operating system — Mac OS or Windows.

Mac OS

Downloaded files for Mac OS will be compressed and have the file extension as ".hqx" or ".dmg". Files with the extension ".dmg" can be decompressed by double-clicking on the file. Utilities such as SmithMicro Software's Stuffit Expander are available that will un-encode and decompress other file types.

Windows

Downloaded files for Windows will be compressed and have the file extension as ".zip". Files with the extension ".zip" can be decompressed by double-clicking on the file. Utilities such as WinZip are available that will un-encode and decompress the file.
